The Department of Inspectional Services was formed in 1996 by the City to coordinate services for the building, housing and fire prevention bureau for a more efficient handling of inspection and procedures for new construction, remodeling, rental occupancies, complaints relating to property conditions, flood plain issues and zoning.
The Department of Building and Zoning helps the people of Calumet City preserve and create a quality community life through comprehensive planning which responds to the changing needs and values of the community, both in the natural and built environments, and creates opportunities to realize the community’s desired vision of the future.
Our vision is that development in Calumet City will proceed in a manner that is well planned and respectful of private property rights; ensures that our citizens live and work in safe structures; provides the infrastructure necessary to support and enhance our quality of life; promotes economic expansion and job creation; protects our open spaces and historic structures; and offers ample opportunities for recreation, athletic participation and interaction with our natural environment.
